Research First-Ever Study of AAPI Representation Among VC Investors Finds Persistent Underrepresentation Despite a perception of inclusion, new data from DECODE, UC Berkeley’s SCET, and AAAIM show that AAPIs face an imbalanced reality. In the fields of investments and venture capital, the narrative often revolves around a world full of innovation and opportunity. However, beneath the surface lies a glaring reality that challenges these notions of potential. In a first-of-its-kind study, research from DECODE, UC Berkeley’s Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology (SCET), and AAAIM now sheds light on a concerning issue: the significant lack of representation of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) in funding opportunities and career advancement within the VC investment community. READ THE FULL BLOG POST READ THE REPORT New AAAIM Study: AAPI-owned Funds Significantly Underrepresented in US AUM Despite Outperformance As several AAAIM studies have found, AAPIs’ experience in the asset management industry is incongruent with perception that AAPIs are overrepresented in asset management. One consequence of this misperception is that AAPIs are categorized as a ‘majority demographic’ – and as such are denied access or overlooked as candidates for advancement programs. In 2020, AAAIM initiated a series of research studies in partnership with Bella Private Markets under the leadership of Professor Josh Lerner of the Harvard Business School to analyze AAPI representation in the asset management industry. Like other diverse communities, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) face structural barriers in career advancement, resulting in exclusion when moving up into leadership positions at asset management firms. Simultaneously, AAPIs deal with the ‘model minority myth’ and unconscious bias which leads the industry to group AAPIs with Caucasians rather than with other minority communities. READ THE REPORT READ THE PRESS RELEASE Featured in Beyond the Glass Ceiling: Examining the Intersectionality of Being an AAPI Woman in Financial Services As a follow up to our widely covered Good Workers – Not Leaders” study, AAAIM and Backstop Solutions now tackle the unique challenges facing AAPI women in investment industry. This year’s survey and research looked at the double bind” facing many AAPI women who must navigate both the bamboo and glass ceilings simultaneously. A majority of AAPI women surveyed indicate that the combination of these gender and racial biases have had a material impact on their professional growth and upward mobility in their career.
